Core eligibility

What UK Visas & Immigration will check

Every Standard Visitor application is assessed against the same core rules, regardless of your purpose of travel.

You genuinely intend to leave

You must convince a caseworker you will leave the UK at the end of your visit and not settle through repeat trips.

You can fund your trip

You (or a sponsor) can support yourself and pay for accommodation, living costs, and your return or onward journey.

Your passport covers your whole stay

A valid passport or travel document is required for the entire length of your visit.

You meet suitability requirements

No relevant convictions, deception in past applications, or history of overstaying or breaching immigration rules.

You must not work in the UK

Paid or unpaid work for a UK employer is prohibited, aside from narrow "permitted paid engagement" exceptions.

You must not live in the UK long-term

Frequent or successive visits that add up to making the UK your main home will breach visitor conditions.

Step 1 · Budget for it

Calculate your visa fee

Choose how long you'd like your visa to be valid for, then add a faster-decision service if you need one. Figures reflect current published Home Office fees.

Not travelling with a visa? Non-visa nationals visiting visa-free instead pay a £20 Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
The Immigration Health Surcharge does not apply to Standard Visitor visas of 6 months or less. Priority services are subject to local availability. Always confirm the live fee on GOV.UK before paying.
Step 2 · Get organised

Build your document checklist

Tick off each item as you gather it. There's no fixed universal list — but these cover what almost every applicant needs.

0 / 8 gathered
Valid passport or travel document

Must be valid for the whole of your intended stay, with at least one blank page.

A recent digital photo meeting UK visa photo requirements.

Proof of finances

Recent bank statements or payslips (typically the last 3–6 months) showing you can support your trip.

Travel itinerary

Flight bookings or an outline of your planned dates and route in and out of the UK.

Accommodation details

Hotel bookings, or an invitation letter from family/friends you're staying with.

Employment or study evidence

A letter confirming your job/course and approved leave or holiday dates, showing ties back home.

Purpose-specific paperwork

E.g. a business invitation letter, conference details, or a letter from a UK clinic for medical treatment.

TB test certificate (if applicable)

Only required if you're visiting for more than 6 months and are from a listed country.

1
Preparation

Check your eligibility & permitted activities

  • Confirm your purpose of visit is allowed as a Standard Visitor (tourism, business, short study, medical treatment, etc).
  • Review the core eligibility rules above — genuine intent, funds, and suitability.
  • If you plan to marry or give notice of marriage, you need a Marriage Visitor visa instead.
2
Preparation

Gather your supporting documents

  • Use the checklist above as your starting point.
  • Translate any non-English or non-Welsh documents, verified by an approved translator.
  • Keep digital copies ready — most documents are uploaded online.
3
Timing

Start your online application

  • Apply on GOV.UK — the earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel.
  • Create an account; you can save your form and finish it later.
  • Each family member needs a separate application, even children.
4
Form

Complete the application form

  • Enter personal details, travel history, and your purpose and itinerary in English.
  • Review the summary page carefully before continuing — mistakes can delay your decision.
  • Answer all suitability questions honestly and completely.
5
Payment

Pay the application fee

  • Pay online by debit or credit card using the fee calculator above as a guide.
  • Add Priority or Super Priority if you need a faster decision and it's available at your location.
  • Fees are generally non-refundable, even if your visa is refused or shortened.
6
Biometrics

Book your visa application centre appointment

  • Choose a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in your country to give biometrics.
  • Select and confirm the country where you'll provide fingerprints and a photo.
  • Book as early as possible — appointment slots fill up quickly.
7
In person

Attend your appointment

  • Bring your passport, confirmation email, and all supporting documents.
  • Give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics).
  • Some centres offer optional services like document scanning or courier return.
8
Waiting

Wait for a decision

  • Standard processing takes around 3 weeks (15 working days) from your appointment.
  • You'll receive an email once UK Visas and Immigration has decided.
  • If approved, your passport is returned with a visa or you're issued an eVisa linked to your account.
Travel day

Travel to the UK

  • Carry your passport/visa and copies of key supporting documents in your hand luggage.
  • Be ready to answer a Border Force officer's questions about your visit and finances.
  • Keep to the activities and duration stated in your visa conditions throughout your stay.
Know the limits

What a Standard Visitor visa does not let you do

Breaching these conditions can lead to refusal at the border or trouble with future applications.

Work in the UK

No paid or unpaid employment, including freelance or remote work for a UK client, aside from narrow permitted paid engagements.

Long-term study

Courses longer than 6 months require a Student visa, not a Standard Visitor visa.

Access public funds

You can't claim UK benefits or use the NHS beyond emergency or agreed private treatment.

Marry without the right visa

Marrying, forming a civil partnership, or giving notice needs a Marriage Visitor visa instead.

Live in the UK via repeat visits

Frequent or successive visits that amount to living in the UK will put your visa status at risk.

Bring family automatically

Each family member, including children, must submit and pay for their own separate application.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

How long can I stay on a Standard Visitor visa?
Up to 6 months per visit for most purposes. Certain circumstances, such as ongoing medical treatment, may allow a longer stay.
Can I extend my visa once I'm in the UK?
Extensions are rarely granted for visitors. In most cases you must leave the UK by your visa expiry date and apply again from outside the UK if needed.
What's a long-term Standard Visitor visa?
If you visit the UK regularly, you can apply for a 2, 5, or 10-year multiple-entry visa instead of reapplying every 6 months. Each individual visit is still capped at 6 months.
What if I'm under 18?
You can still apply, but a long-term visa will only remain valid for up to 6 months after you turn 18. Minors travelling without a parent typically need a signed consent letter.
Do I need a visa if I'm only passing through the UK?
If transiting is your only reason for coming to the UK, you may be able to apply for a cheaper Visitor in Transit visa instead of the Standard Visitor visa.
